Biological Information

Background Information:

Adenosine receptors belong to the superfamily of G protein-coupled seven transmembrane proteins. G-protein-coupled receptors constitute one of the major signal transduction systems in eukaryotic cells. Coding sequences for these receptors, in those regions believed to contribute to the agonist-antagonist binding site, are strongly conserved across mammalian species. Adenosine receptors may also be called P1 receptors, which are distinguished from transmitter-gated ion channels (P2X receptors) and G protein-coupled receptors (P2Y).

cAMP Hunter™ Gi cell lines overexpress naturally Gi coupled, wild type GPCRs and are designed to detect inhibition of intracellular cAMP production in response to agonist stimulation of the receptor. These cell lines are designed to be used in conjunction with the HitHunter® cAMP Assay Detection Kit.

Clinical Relevance

Adverse / Beneficial Action:

Adenosine A1 receptor agonism may cause bradycardia, analgesia and anxiolytic activity;. Antagonism may increase sympathetic and parasympathetic activity; may also be useful in treatment of congestive heart failure by blocking adenosine-mediated constriction of blood flow to kidneys and inhibit salt and water reabsorption to increase urine volume.
