Biological Information
Background Information:
Butyrylcholinesterase (Cholinesterase, Acylcholine acylhydrolase, Choline esterase II, Butyrylcholine esterase, Pseudocholinesterase, EC 3.1.1.8) hydrolyzes butyrylcholine in a manner similar to acetylcholinesterase hydrolysis of acetylcholine. Butyrylcholinesterase is synthesized in many tissues, including the liver, lungs, heart and brain. Roles for butyrylcholinesterase have been suggested in lipoprotein metabolism, myelin maintenance, cellular adhesion, neurogenesis, neurite growth, as a scavenger of toxic molecules and in the processing of the amyloid precursor protein. In human brain, the enzyme is found in neurones, glia and in the plaques and tangles of Alzheimer's disease. Selective butyrylcholinesterase inhibitors are designed to protect the cholinergic system, which is essential for memory and learning and is progressively destroyed in Alzheimer's disease.
