Biological Information

Background Information:

Cyclooxygenase (COX; prostaglandin endoperoxide synthase, EC 1.14.99.1) catalyzes the conversion of arachidonic acid to form the cyclic endoperoxides PGG and PGH) and subsequent metabolite products including prostaglandins and thromboxanes. There are two isoforms of this enzyme, cyclooxygenase-1 and -2 (COX-1 and COX-2). COX-1 is constitutively expressed in most cells. In contrast, COX-2 is not normally present but may be induced by certain serum factors, cytokines, growth factors and endotoxin. Inhibitors of COX-1 exhibit antithrombic activity and may also cause gastric ulceration. Inhibitors of COX-2 exhibit anti-inflammatory activity and may inhibit some mitogenic actions.
