High-Throughput Viscosity Measurements

Ensure Therapeutic Efficacy and Manufacturability by Optimizing Viscosity

At Eurofins Discovery, we can perform high-throughput, small-scale concentrations of multiple samples, as well as screen multiple buffer conditions simultaneously.

Therapeutic dosage for large molecules varies widely. For subcutaneous delivery, medications generally have to be highly concentrated to have a therapeutic effect. Viscosity measurement is important when it comes to determining a wide range of data points—such as at what point can a fluid flow through a syringe? Viscosity also varies widely at different temperatures.

Concentrating samples to a therapeutic dose can cause an unacceptable increase in viscosity that would hinder drug delivery. And concentration can cause aggregation of large molecule therapeutics. Aggregated large molecules can be extremely immunogenic, so a delicate balance must be formed between concentrating the drug to a therapeutic dosage without causing aggregation or significant increase in viscosity. Optimization of leads for manufacturing often requires a combination of modifications to both drug and buffer conditions.
With our experienced team and expansive technical capabilities, we can carry out high-throughput viscosity measurements at multiple temperatures for you, following buffer exchange or concentration, with as little as 9 microliters of material per sample.

Assessing viscosity early, before large-scale expression, can save you time and money optimizing later. By using high-throughput microfluidic instruments, we can make more measurements with a smaller sample input, so more conditions can be tested without using as much sample material.
